There was a time when I struggled with wanting to take my own life.

It was in my early 20s. I was lonely and lost. When the dark thoughts came with their seductive energy, I had few tools to fight them, so I tried to end my life more than once, only to wake up in the hospital feeling like a failure.

Today I travel around the world taking people on spiritual journeys to find themselves. I am forever grateful the Creator had a different plan for me and enabled me to survive long enough to discover and embrace self-love, which was the path out the darkness of despair.

When you feel depression coming on—and it can happen from time to time—follow these steps:

  1. When you experience fear, stress or feel out of control, ask yourself: Where are my thoughts right now? When we’re stressed or fearful, it usually means we’re in the future or the past, where we have no power. We must practice being radically mindful to get our power back.
  2. Ask yourself, “Am I okay right now?” I mean in this very Then breathe. Take long, deep breaths, and then release it all, repeating as necessary.
  3. Ask yourself if the thoughts you have that are currently causing you fear are real or true? Have they ever been true or real?
  4. Ask yourself, is what you’re doing right now getting you closer to or further from your desired outcome?
  5. Get radically mindful by using meditation, yoga, or even aromatherapy to help anchor you and bring you back to the present moment.
  6. Act! Physically do something to shift the energy and the state that you’re currently in. By getting up and taking a walk, going for a workout, walking your pet, going shopping, getting a massage or just getting up from your chair will shift the energy and allow you to get radically mindful and help you realize the power you have to change your life!
  7. Practice gratitude. It’s really hard for the Universe to bless you with anything until you are truly grateful for what you have right now. Journal them.
  8. Call a friend and ask them to hear you out. You would listen if someone called you upset, right? If someone trusted you enough to be totally transparent with you, of course you’d lend an ear.

And if you think by some stretch of the imagination that you are unloved by the whole Universe, know that you are loved by me. I guarantee it.
