Interview with Daniel Olexa, CCHt, ACC

How do you square western medicine with all the other kinds of healing available? Western medicine has its place, but science has also shown that our whole body is made up of energy which western medicine rarely treats. So, we’re made up of energy, and then energy blocks occur, we want to clear the flow of that movement. It could be tied-up emotions, or muscles stress, which is nothing more than bound-up energy. If we can free that and get it flowing again, there’s a major impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of the person.

We know too much cholesterol can form clots and stop blood flow, but how do you explain energy blocks stopping energy flow? From my perspective, it could be a belief that was impressed upon you at a very young age by a figure of authority, a parent or a family member, or maybe a teacher. If trauma occurred, then the belief would be formed from that experience.

It may not be a healthy belief, but it was seen as a necessary step by the psyche to survive the ordeal, to make sense of why the trauma occurred. Yes. Another way of saying it is a client isn’t angry because they have an ulcer; they have an ulcer because they’re angry. So, there’s causality: that energy of the frustration and anger they’re pulling down and suppressing is causing a chemical imbalance in the body. If I’m pulling an emotion down, it has to go somewhere. Anger can easily give me a stomach upset that causes an imbalance. I’m not eating well, I’m not digesting well, all because of that negative energy I pulled into my stomach.

Thoughts are energy. Right, and energy can’t be destroyed, it has to transform or exist as it is. Where does it go? If I start having an angry thought, it’s going into my body and probably lodging there. Let’s say someone’s in a relationship that’s frustrating them, and they’re trying to figure out “Do I stay or do I go?” There’s an exercise I do called “The Felt Sense” that has them focus on the situation as it is, and ask them “Where is the sensation within your body?” It could be a churning in their stomach, or their heart starts racing, or there’s a tension in their chest. Then I have them open their eyes, clear their mind, and I have them imagine the other scenario where they’re out of the relationship and do the same exercise. If they feel greater freedom and they feel like they can breathe easier, that gives them more clarity. Your body knows, even while your ego is dealing with past conditioning of what “should” or “should not” be done. The body knows how we can be happy and lead an authentic life.
