Radiance: What do you want people to know about The Sanctuary?

Ajita Patel: That it’s a space for healing. If they have any health concerns or if they’re seeking a community where they can learn about health—and connect with others interested in holistic health and complementary medicine—this is the place to come.

Initially, most people come for yoga and meditation classes, some for relief from pain or stress and to get a massage, and they often fall in love with the energy here, exploring all the other incredible healing modalities and experience dramatic health results. Healers practice here because of the space and the nurturing environment. They are experienced and sincere in their practice, and that comes across.

When it comes to healing, I want people to know they can come here and trust. We’ll take the time to listen, to pay attention to who they are, what’s going on and why. We’re going to explore how to get them well and find balance again. A lot of my patients have never received that kind of attention before.

Q: What would surprise people about Ayurveda?

AP: It’s very simple, intuitive and natural. It’s not foreign or a fad. In fact, it’s ancient and time-tested over thousands of generations.

We hear a lot about integrative medicine or functional medicine or mind-body health. Ayurveda is exactly this and more. It’s a complete manual for how to live every aspect of your life so that you live to your fullest potential. It starts with getting to know who you are, what your challenges and tendencies are, your unique personality and your daily routine.

Q: Becoming aware of these things could be a new experience in itself.

AP: Yes. Many people have never paid serious attention to these things, and our busy lifestyles and traditional medicine certainly don’t emphasize it. Ayurveda is all about creating Self awareness and really paying attention to how the mind and body responds to what comes in from our senses.

Q: What is involved in an Ayurvedic treatment?

AP: Initially, the focus will be to address the health of your digestive system, the state of your mind and your lifestyle. Based on your specific condition, you may be given custom-blended herbs, specific food guidelines (not just what you eat, but how and when). You may be given breathwork techniques (known as pranayama) or you may be prescribed therapeutic Ayurvedic body therapies. Gradually, you will be guided to create a healthy lifestyle that sustains you so that you have energy, strength, flexibility, alertness, enthusiasm, contentment and joy regardless of your circumstances or relationships.
